Livingston James Partners with AKELA Construction to Recruit a Finance Director

Livingston James is delighted to be partnered with AKELA Construction to appoint a Finance Director, supporting the business through its next phase of strategic growth and development.

Founded in 2003, AKELA Construction is a leading, owner-managed civil engineering contractor headquartered in Thornliebank, Glasgow, operating across Scotland and England. The business delivers projects across the Energy, Civil Engineering and Residential Infrastructure sectors, with a strong ethos of self-delivery that provides greater control over programme, quality, health, safety and environmental performance. With over 250 employees, extensive in-house plant, and a growing portfolio of live projects, AKELA has built a strong reputation for delivering complex infrastructure solutions safely, on time, and on budget.

As the business enters an exciting next stage – including expansion within the energy sector and continued diversification of its revenue streams – AKELA is seeking to appoint a Finance Director in a newly created role.

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Finance Director will be a key member of the Senior Leadership Team. The role will lead and develop the finance function, ensuring systems, processes, reporting and controls are fit for purpose as the organisation grows in scale and complexity. The remit will span financial strategy, cashflow and working capital management, governance, and performance reporting, alongside providing commercial insight on project performance, investment opportunities, and strategic initiatives.

This individual will act as a trusted business partner to the leadership team, supporting decision-making through robust financial modelling, forecasting, scenario analysis and enhanced management information. Over time, there is also potential for the role to evolve in scope as the wider AKELA Group continues to expand.

We are seeking an accomplished finance leader, qualified at CA, ACCA, ACMA or equivalent level. Experience in construction, engineering, energy or similarly project-led environments would be advantageous but not essential. Strong technical capability, commercial acumen, and the ability to influence and collaborate at senior level are essential, alongside a hands-on and pragmatic approach suited to an entrepreneurial, owner-managed business.
