Livingston James Retained by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh to Appoint Director of Digital Enablement

Shape the Digital Future of a World‑Leading Professional Body

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) is embarking on a major digital transformation, modernising its systems, platforms, infrastructure and digital capabilities to create a seamless, resilient, user‑centred digital experience for members, exam candidates, volunteers and staff. To lead this work, RCSEd is now seeking an exceptional Director of Digital Enablement, a newly created senior leadership role with the mandate to define and deliver the College’s digital future.

The Director of Digital Enablement will play a pivotal role in accelerating RCSEd’s modernisation programme by creating and delivering a College‑wide IT strategy and overseeing the transition from legacy systems. Development of digital skills and confidence across the College will be critical, underpinned by a robust digital literacy framework and a commitment to developing a digitally capable workforce. Leading and developing a newly created multidisciplinary Digital Enablement Directorate, you will drive cultural and operational transformation focused on enhancing ways of working, strengthening governance and embedding user‑centred, evidence‑based design principles.

RCSEd is looking for an accomplished digital leader who is both a strategic thinker and a hands‑on leader, equally comfortable setting vision, solving operational challenges and building a culture of delivery. With direct experience of leading and developing a sustainable IT function to support both current and future organisational needs, you will bring strong understanding of digital, data, governance, cyber security and modern IT delivery models. With a collaborative and strategic mindset, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to lead through influence, building strong relationships, and driving clarity and confidence across diverse teams.

Initially a three year fixed term contract, this leadership role can be undertaken on either a full time, secondment or compressed hours arrangement. It offers the successful candidate a unique opportunity to shape the College’s digital future from the ground up, within a values-driven, mission-led organisation with global reach and a strong commitment to excellence.
