Livingston James Partners with Optos to Appoint Director of Quality

When a five-year-old boy was blinded after a regular eye exam failed to spot a retinal detachment, his father made it his life’s work to help eye care professionals by revolutionising retinal imaging. Optos was founded by Douglas Anderson with the goal to make a patient-friendly device to capture a digital ultra-widefield image of the retina. Today, millions of patients around the world have benefited from optomap® retinal imaging.

Optos was acquired by Nikon Corporation in 2015 and now operates as a group of companies within the Nikon Healthcare division. Optos recently celebrated its 30th anniversary and is proud to be recognised as a leading provider of devices to eye care professionals to provide a more complete approach to patient care.

The business has c.$300 million of revenues, 650 staff globally and manufactures 60% of its products in the UK.

Optos is looking for a Director of Quality, reporting to the VP of Global Quality, to lead the end-to-end quality strategy. The role will ensure products meet regulatory, internal, and customer standards whilst providing full accountability for Quality Assurance and Quality Control across global operations.

The incumbent will be expected to protect product integrity, consumer safety, and brand reputation whilst ensuring compliance and successful outcomes of all external audits, and embedding a culture of quality through strong leadership and cross‑functional alignment.

The ideal candidate will be a proactive and accountable individual who thrives in a high-autonomy environment. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a strong track record of identifying gaps, driving efficiencies, and taking full ownership of quality initiatives through to resolution, while confidently influencing stakeholders across wider business functions.

A clear and effective communicator, they will bring gravitas and credibility, fostering a culture where quality has greater impact. Experienced within a manufacturing environment, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to apply quality principles pragmatically and deliver measurable continuous improvement outcomes.
